What is Water Pump?

A water pump is a mechanical device that is used to properly flow the coolant throughout the cooling system to cool the engine.

The efficient working of the pump improves the engine performance and prevents the engine from overheating. It mainly handles the coolant flow throughout the engine and cooling system. It is connected to the engine through hoses. The main function of the water pump is to properly supply the fresh coolant from the radiator to the engine.

If the water pump is damaged or fails, the engine cannot receive a sufficient amount of coolant; due to that, it may overheat. A sufficient amount of coolant in the radiator is very important for the efficient performance of the pump.

As the water pump goes bad, it generates different signs through that you can identify a failed pump.

Symptoms of a Bad Water Pump

A bad water pump generates one of the below-given signs. As you notice, any of the below-given signs, it means you may have a bad water pump. In such conditions, contact the mechanic.

1) Squealing Noise

As the water pump fails, coolant can seep into the pump bearing, which may dry out the grease in the bearings. When the bearings don’t have sufficient grease, they start producing grinding noise when the engine is running. Therefore, as you notice noise coming from the pump, you must replace your pump quickly because the failed pump may damage your engine.

2) Engine Overheating

The engine overheating is one of the main signs of a bad or failed water pump. As we discussed above, the main function of the vehicle pump is to properly pump the coolant throughout the engine. As the pump fails, it can’t pump the coolant from the radiator to the engine, which causes the engine to overheat.

The engine overheating is a serious issue that may lead to severe damage. In such a case, stop the vehicle and replace your pump. You shouldn’t drive the vehicle in case of engine overheating.

3) Coolant Leaks

The coolant leak from the pump shows that you should replace your pump. The head gasket is used to stop the coolant leaks from the water pump. As the gasket cracks, blows or wears out, radiator fluid will eventually leak from the front to the center of the vehicle. In case of a coolant leak from the pump, you must replace it as soon as possible because low coolant may lead to engine overheating.

4) Corroded Pump

Air leakage from faulty pressure caps, mineral deposits, incompatible or contaminated antifreeze, and even aging can corrode automotive water pumps. When you open the hood of your car, you may see rust and small holes on the outside of the pump. If you observe rust on your pump, you must replace it immediately because a corroded pump can’t work efficiently.

5) Water Pump’s Axle lose

The timing belt plays a big role in turning the pump. If the water pump axle is worn, the belt may become loose. If this problem is due to the timing belt, you should replace your belt; otherwise, replace the axle of the pump.

6) White Smoke from The Radiator

The leakage of white smoke from the radiator is the main sign of a bad water pump. This steam is generated in the radiator due to the engine overheating. This issue produces when the pump doesn’t work properly. As you encounter this issue, stop your car, wait for a few minutes until your engine cools, and contact the nearest mechanic.

7) Unstable Engine temperature

A loose impeller of the water may cause intermittent problems with the pump. Due to this problem, sometimes the vehicle may overheat and sometimes run normally for a few times. If this issue occurs due to a defective pump, you must replace your pump to prevent an expansive repair.
