According to Japan's Ministry of Science and Technology report, China has overtaken United States to become the world leader in "high-impact" research and scientific research achievements.

According to the Japan report, China now publishes the greatest number of scholarly research papers each year, followed by Germany and the United States.

The numbers of the reports are based on annual averages from 2018 to 2020 and are based on data compiled by analytics company Clarivate.

NISTP Report 

The NISTP report of Japan also found that Chinese research accounted for 27.2 percent of the top 1 percent of the world's most cited articles.

The citation number of the research papers is a usually used measure in the academic world.

The United States reported for 24.9 percent of the top 1 percent most cited studies, while the United Kingdom took 3rd place with 5.5 percent.

According to the report, China publishes an average of 407,181 scientific articles per year, surpassing the United States with 293,434 journal articles.

Japan published this report on the same day that President Biden signed the Chips and Science Act, which provides research funding of US$200 billion over 10 years.
